To make a change from converting VW vans into luxury campers, this time we were converting a 2021 Ford Transit Custom. Take a look at the conversion in this video!
This Ford Transit Custom started life as a van with two opening sliding doors with windows. There had previously been a rear seat in it and it had been half panelled, it had a reasonable spec with all the things you would expect to find in a modern van.
The team set to work stripping out the old panelling, fitting a brand new pop-top roof and double insulating before re-panelling and carpeting. The floor was finished in a hardwearing, grey Altro and the roof was lined in a grey quilted headlining.
Cabinets were designed and cut from lightweight ply on our CNC machine and finished in a 'Carbon' style design. The counter top was made from a pale Corian with a combination stainless steel sink and twin burner gas hob.
As well as having plenty of storage, the units housed a low voltage fridge with ice box and a gas oven. Rails were bolted into the chassis to support the 'California' rear seat and bed system which was trimmed in black leather to match the front seats.
When slid forward, there is still enough room for two rear seat passengers as well as providing a large amount of cargo capacity that may be required for any camping trip, even if you do take the kitchen sink!
When folded flat, the seat and rear parcel shelf push together to make a very comfortable double bed as well as the double bed space in the pop-top roof.
A folding table, stored in one of the rear doors clips into place on a sliding rail in the cabin, when the passenger seat is swivelled around and the California seat is slid forward, it makes a very convenient family dining experience.
This camper has fitted water tanks that can be refilled from the sliding door on the off side, this also provides service access to the oven and fridge.
This camper has a Sargent power unit which controls charging of the battery, 240v power and the leisure battery. There are plenty of power outlets, 240v, 12v and USB as well as independent switches for the LED lighting.
Headrests, side panels and the roof lining were all finished with the customers own 'Paw Print' logo.
This camper was also fitted with a rear shower point for cleaning the dog after a muddy walk. The Ford Custom offers plenty of internal space and is definitely a creditable option to a VW T6.1 if you are looking for a new van to convert.
Outside, we fitted a Fiamma wind-out awning to provide shade and some protection from rain when out on those day trips or camping weekends.
